A REVIEW ON SIGNIFICANCE AND PHARMACEUTICAL DEVELOPMENT OF ORAL THIN FILMS – CURRENT AND FUTURE SCENARIO
Dr. T. Mahesh Kumar* and C. Jenish Jiflin
ABSTRACT
Oral thin film is one of the novel method for the drug delivery, which dissolves or disintegrates within a few seconds and releases the drug in oral cavity for its therapeutic effect. It is the most convenient method and has better patient compliance. Oral films are made up of using various natural and a synthetic polymer in which drug is embedded with other excipients. Most commonly solvent casting method is applied for the manufacturing of films by using the polymeric material like HPMC and their derivatives. The film undergoes various evaluation parameters including physical appearance, surface texture, thickness, folding endurance, moisture uptake, uniformity of weight, drug content, swelling index, disintegration and in vitro dissolution studies. Pharmaceutical dosage form of oral thin film is growing globally in market and has been proven that it is an effective drug delivery for several types of pharmaceutical active moieties.
