CLASSICAL AYURVEDIC REVIEW OF ARSHA

ABSTRACT
Arsha (Piles) is an extremely common problem and it has been
reported since thousands of years and its prevalence rate is highest
among all anorectal disorders. Piles are unique to human beings.
Nearly half of the population generally experience one haemorrhoidal
episode at some point during their lives. Arsha occurs in
Gudapradesha, which is a Sadhyopranahara Marma, Arsha is being
described by Acharya Sushruta and Vagbhata under the “ASHTA
MAHAGADA”. In Arshas (Haemorrhoids) bleeding per anum is the
principal symptom to which patient shows his utmost concern and
always worried if it continues. Person suffering from Arsha undergo
tremendous physical and mental trauma. Arsha is capable of disturbing
an individual like an enemy. Acharya Shusruta mentioned four
treatment modalities to combat this condition namely Bhesaja, Kshara, Agni and Shastra.
Bhesaja chikitsa is mentioned mainly for Arsha in the earlier stages when involved Doshas,
symptoms and complications are not very severe. Arsha symptoms develop more than half of
men and women during their lifetime. Arsha is defined as 'arivat pranan hanti' causing
discomfort, pain and bleeding. The aim of thisliterature study was to review on management
of Arsha.
