ABSTRACT
Pharmaceutical emulsion dosage form is thermodynamically unstable and must be stabilized by adding emulsifying agent. Emulsion refers to mixture that include two or more phase. The pharmaceutical term emulsion is mainly used to indicate preparation prepared for internal used. Pharmaceutical preparation for the treatment of skin care are usally supplies in the form of emulsion. The droplrt size variation is an important parameter that influence the stability and rheological characteristics of emulsion. HLB value is important in preparation of emulsion. Emulsion instability is described by flocculation, creaming,
phase inversion, braking. Their are different types of emulsion like as oil in water (o/w), water in oil (W/O), Nanoemulsion and microemulsion etc. Emulsion are thermodynamically unstable, heterogenous, biphasic liquid system which consist of globules of oil is uniformly distributed in continuous phase which is stabilized by adding emulsifying agent. This paper is an attempt to summarized comparative aspects like definition, types of emulsion, advantages, disadvantages, instability and emulsifying agent.
Keywords: Microemulsion, Nano emulsion, Emulsifier, Cohelescence, Flocculation, Creaming, phase.
