ABSTRACT

Gastrointestinal tract is susceptible to radiation damage, resulting in widespread morbidity and mortality. Although process of damage involves the action of storming of free radicals and increase in oxidative stress which leads to associated gastrointestinal damage. A Gastroretentive drug delivery system prolongs gastric residence time, allowing specific drugs to be released in the upper gastrointestinal tract (GIT) for local or systemic effects. Insitu gelling drug delivery system have gained enormous attention as during the administration, they are in a sol state, and they can form gels when endogenous triggers such as temperature, pH, ions are present. These types of systems can be administered via different routes to carry off local and systemic effects with high permeability, sustained release, better bioavailability, avoids hepatic metabolism, low dose required and better patient compliance. Thus, this review focuses on physiology of radiation induced gastritis syndrome, oral insitu gelling system with natural and synthetic polymers, approaches of formulation that having great advantages in pharmaceutical formulations.
