REVIEW ON: PHYTOCHEMICAL AND PHARMACOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF ABELMOSCHUS ESCULENTUS (L)

ABSTRACT
Abelmoschus esculentus (L) has popularly fruit known as Okra. Abelmoschus is New Latin from Arabic while esculentus is Latin for being fit for human consumption. Okra is the only vegetable crop. And its Malvaceae family and is very popular in the Indo-Pak subcontinent. In India, it number one ranks in its consumption but its original home is and Sudan, and African countries, Ethiopia, North-eastern. Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is a important medicinal plant of tropical and subtropical India. Its medicinal usage has been reported in the traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, and Unani, Siddha. Okra contains important phytochemicals and various nutrients. It possesses a number of important biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory, organ protective, and neuropharmacological, antibacterial, antidiabetic, anticancer activities. The fruit and seeds are well tolerated in humans and other animals. It is good source of minerals, vitamins and nutrients that are responsible for the health benefits.
