ANALYSIS OF PRESCRIPTION PATTERN OF ANTI EPILEPTIC DRUGS, THEIR SAFETY AND COST IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL: A PROSPECTIVE OBSERVATIONAL STUDY

ABSTRACT
Background: The main objective of present study was to find out the prescribing pattern, safety and cost variation analysis of the anti-epileptic drugs prescribed. Materials and methods: This prospective observational study was carried out for a period of 6 months in department of Pharmacy Practice, Karnataka College of Pharmacy, Bangalore Baptist Hospital, Bangalore. Screening of patients was based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The study was conducted on 134 patient receiving anti-epileptic medication. The study showed that the maximum number of patient receiving anti-epileptic medication belongs to age group of 25 to 64 years, distribution of different seizure type, total generalised seizures in male
39, 22 in female. Total partial seizures in male 5, female is 3, total unclassified seizures in male 9 and in female 4, shows the utilization of anti epileptic drugs, we can see Levetiracetam is highly prescribed drug which is about 111(39.08%) followed by Midazolam 36(12.6%). Shows severity and mechanism of drug interaction, provides information about the common drug interaction is depend on number of time drug were prescribed it has been identified that there was 9(20.9%) Major, 32 (74.4%) Moderate and 2 (4.6%) Minor. Conclusion: This study is an attempt to evaluate the anti-epileptic drug prescribing and usage of tertiary care hospital. The study shows that majority seizures cases was in male patient which may be because of higher male: female ratio. The study result shows that majority seizure type was generalized tonic clonic seizures.
