ABSTRACT

Background: Shatavari Taila is mentioned in Ayurvedic classics as a therapeutic formulation to treat Asrigdara. Shatavari Taila contains 26 ingredients and base is Tila Taila. All the ingredients have Pitta-Vata pacifying properties. Aim and Objectives: In present study attempt has been made to evaluate and develop pharmacognostical and pharmaceutical standards as per Ayurvedic Pharmacopoeia of India (API)for Shatavari Taila. Materials & Methods: Preliminary Pharmacognostical and Pharmaceutical parameters, High-Performance Thin Layer Chromatography has been performed as per Standard method. Results: The Pharmacognostical study of ingredients of Shatavari Taila showed the acicular, lignified cork, annular vessels of Shatavari, pollen grains, stellate trichome of Atibala, prismatic crystal, stellate trichome of Bala, crystal fibres of Bilwa, hypodermal cells, striated fibres, oil globules of Ela, parenchymal cells and prismatic crystals of Jatamansi etc. were found. Pharmaceutical analysis of Shatavari Taila showed that saponification value (mg/g) was 158.7, acid value (%) was 0.588, Iodine value (I2 100/g) was 101.2, specific gravity at room temperature was 0.9148 and refractive index was 1.4830 respectively etc. High performance thin layer chromatography profile of Shatavari Taila showed similarities in number of spots. Conclusion: Standard value from this study can be used for further researches and evaluation of Shatavari Taila helps in Quality control tool for its manufacturing or processing. Analysis through Pharmacognostical and Pharmaceutical shows suitability of drug for Basti purpose.
