Abstract

MICRONEEDLES: A REVIEW

Kalyani Gadakh* and Sachinkumar Gunjal

ABSTRACT

Transdermal route has been explored for a number of agents due to its benefit of bypassing the first bypass effect and sustained release of drug. Due to strong barrier properties of the skin, primarily stratum corneum (SC), the delivery of many therapeutic agents throughout the skin has turn out to be challenging. The new way form of drug delivery system known as the microneedles helps to improve the delivery of the drug through this route and tackle the number of troubles associated with the conventional formulations. The principle includes disruption of the skin layer, consequently developing micron size pathways that lead the drug directly to the epidermis or upper dermis area from where the drug can immediately go into the systemic circulation except going through the barrier. This review describes the number of potential and applications of the microneedles. The number of kinds of microneedles can be fabricated like solid, dissolving, hydrogel, coated and hollow microneedles. Microneedle-based transdermal delivery approach will offer a self-management, patient-friendly, and efficient administration route for drug delivery. The goal of this review is in most cases targeted on types of microneedles, a number of substances and fabrication techniques used in the framing of microneedles.

Keywords: Microneedles, Hydrogel, Drug delivery, Applications, Types.
