Abstract

REVIEW ON: TO STUDY DRUG NEEM AS A DRUG ACTING ON ANTIDIABETIC AGENTS

Mundkar Prasad Ananda*, Pawar Raju Ram, Priyanka Jadhav and Dr. Pravin Cholke

ABSTRACT

Metabolic syndrome is a disease associated with obesity, diabetes, dyslipidemia and hypertension. Recently, the use of phytochemicals in the control and treatment of metabolic syndrome has been suggested. Azadirachta indica (Neem) is an evergreen tree that belongs to the Meliaceae family. Several studies have confirmed the anti-diabetic and anti-hypertensive, anti-hyperlipidemic and anti-obesity effects of neem. In this review, we report the protective effects of neem againstComplications of the metabolic syndrome with special attention to the mechanisms involved. Neem has been shown to control hyperglycemia and hypertension through overexpression of transcription factor, nuclear factor, erythroid-related factor 2 2 (Nrf2) and antioxidant effects. Neem also reduced glucose uptake by upregulating glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) and inhibiting key gut enzymes like glucosidases. Endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2 (ERK1/2) signaling pathway. Antioxidant activity plays an important role in neem's protective mechanisms against metabolic syndrome and its complications.
