Abstract

GRADING OF KNEE OSTEOARTHRITIS IN ULTRASOUND AND X RAY CHARACTERISTICS OF MUSCULOSKELETAL (CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY)

Dr. Aseen Adil Tawfeeq and *Dr. Ruba Abbas Fadhil

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy of musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSUS) and X-ray in the detection of knee osteoarthritis (KOA). Methods: Our sample included 25 individuals with arthroscopically confirmed KOA (27 knees). Fifty healthy volunteers of similar age and gender who were scheduled for a physical at the same time served as controls. Each subject was healthy, with no signs of KOA on imaging tests. MSUS and X-ray were used to check out everyone in the study. MSUS and X-ray were evaluated independently for their diagnostic utility in KOA patients by comparing their individual levels of sensitivity and specificity. Compared to X-ray, the MSUS detection rate for KOA was significantly greater (P0.05). The diagnostic effectiveness of MSUS was greater than that of X-ray (P0.05), with MSUS achieving sensitivity of 92.98%, specificity of 78.95%, and accuracy of 89.17% in the diagnosis of KOA, whereas X-ray reached sensitivity of 73.28%, specificity of 58.94%, and accuracy of 63.69%. MSUS improved diagnostic concordance and reduced misdiagnosis compared to X-ray (P0.05). In summary, compared to X-ray, MSUS proved more sensitive, specific, and accurate in diagnosing KOA.

Keywords: Ultrasound imaging of the musculoskeletal system, osteoarthritis of the knee, synovial inflammation, and cartilage tissue.
