Abstract

DIABETES, GLUCOSIDASE INHIBITORS AND THE CARDIOVASCULAR SYSTEM: A REVIEW

Pineda-Pérez Melissa Catalina*, Sánchez-Díaz Remedios and Torralva-Sandoval Ramón Francisco

ABSTRACT

Diabetes is a global health problem with increasing numbers every year, characterized by high blood glucose levels, it is a metabolic syndrome in which the presence of hyperglycemia increases the risk of cardiovascular disease; it’s treated with a variety of drugs, more commonly used: acarbose and miglitol. The first two drug are glucosidase inhibitors, (GIs), these drugs act over the glucosidase, which is a lysosomal enzyme that catalyzes the degradation of glycogen to glucose; when this enzyme is absent from the organism caused by an inherited disorder it causes the Pompe disease. GIs, are used as treatment for diabetes, but these drugs also happen to help with the increased cardiovascular risk. It has been reported the effects of the drugs in other systems of the human body like in the gastrointestinal tract but not many over the interaction with the cardiovascular system and the GIs.

Keywords: Glucosidase inhibitor, Heart, Cardiovascular.
