CRITICAL REVIEW ON AGNIKUMAR RASA IN IRRITABLE BOWEL SYNDROME W.S.R. TO GRAHANI ROGA

ABSTRACT
Grahani Roga (irritable bowel syndrome) is a sickness related with gastrointestinal tract. Grahani is a disease of disturbed digestive agni called as agnimandya in Ayurveda. In the present era of fast food, irregularity in diet, sedentary life- style and tremendous mental stress; psychological factors like excessive work, anger, emotions etc. leads to agni dusti (impairment in digestive functions) it causes many diseases but mainly grahani roga. Classical sign and symptoms of grahani roga i.e., muhu baddha (hard stool) and drava mala pravritti (loose motion), apachita food materials (indigested food materials), Udara shoola (abdominal pain) etc. According to modern science irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS) is a functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by varying bowel habits and recurrent abdominal pain in the absence of detectable structural abnormalities. The prevalence of IBS varies across the world, from as high as 10%-20% in the West, to as low as 4.2% in India. Thus, an attempt has been made to evaluate the probable efficacy of Agnikumar rasa, a herbo-mineral formulation mentioned in Bhaishajya Ratnawali (Grahaniroga chikitsa). Aim: To evaluate the role of Agnikumar rasa in irritable bowel syndrome w.s.r. to grahani roga. Objective: To study the mechanism of Agnikumar rasa on Grahani mentioned in ayurvedic classics. Material & Methods: The ayurvedic classics, research articles, online journals were thoroughly reviewed to complete relevant and specific data about Agnikumar rasa and its contents. Observation: The review of ayurvedic classics, research articles, online journals have proved curative activity of ingredients of Agnikumar rasa. Conclusion: Agnikumar rasa is a herbo-mineral formulation which mainly contains vatsnabh (aconitum) as major and active ingredient. Drugs having deepana and pachana property like maricha, shunthi, pippali, ajmoda. Pipalli help in improving the functions of Jatharagni in body and helps in separation of dosha from Dhatu. Agnikumar rasa contains deepana, pachana and agnivardhan dravyas. All the contains shows that they mainly act on annavaha strotasa. The commonly present dravya maricha which does pachan karma. Vatsanabh is toxic drug but when used after purification acts as vyavayi, vikasi, kledashoshak and aampachak. Tankan is a kshaariya dravya which acts as aampachak. Kajjali right here acts as preservative to growth shelf existence of this drug and even act as catalyst. Thus, agnikumar rasa can be safely prescribed to the patients suffering from Grahani (irritable bowel syndrome).
