Swati Jagotra* and Kush Pandey

ABSTRACT

According to W.H.O. around 4 billion people around the globe use ayurvedic drugs for their primary health care. As we are very well aware about the importance of ayurvedic drugs in present era and how efficient they are in curing disease and in routine life. But with the increased demand of medicinal plants/drugs, there also comes its shortage which leads to adulteration. Cause of adulteration is due to over exploitation, loss of habitat, deforestation etc. Keeping in view of increased demand and shortage of drugs, Ancient Ayurvedic texts have introduced the concept of Pratinidhi dravyas which have similar properties like rasa, guna, virya, vipaka and karma. These drugs are morphologically different but have almost same properties. This concept was first mentioned in Bhavaprakasha in 16th century.[1] Pratinidhi dravya is being called substitution in modern era. Here one pair of Pratinidhi dravya is taken i.e., Mulethi and Dhataki, comparative study of both the drugs is done and compared on the basis of analytical study like Pharmacognostic study, physiochemical, phytochemical, macro nutrients, micro nutrients, TLC and HPTLC study is done and conclusion is drawn accordingly.

Keywords: Substitute, Pratinidhi dravyas, Mulethi, Dhataki, Analytical study.
