Abstract

CLINICAL TRIAL OF SENNA ALATA OINTMENT IN THE MANAGEMENT OF DADRU (FUNGAL SKIN DISEASES)

ABSTRACT

Fungal infection is highly contagious disease as it spread very quickly and affects almost every part in our body. Among the common variety of fungal infection Superficial fungal infection is one of the commonest variant of fungal infection. In Ayurvedic texts all the fungal infection can be compared to Dadru. As, the presenting sign and symptoms of Dadru are almost similar to Superficial fungal infection caused by Dermatophytes. In relation to treatment aspect as its is known to all that Modern Antifungal molecule is becoming resistant day by day. Ayurveda the alternate system of medicine and traditional medicinal systems of India discovered so many effective antifungal herbs and oral medicine which are seen very much effective in fungal skin diseases. In Assam a herb known as Kharpat which scientific name is Senna alata (L) Roxb has been used since long time in different Khar (?? Fungal skin diseases) by the traditional healers. To validate the claim scientifically its scientific study was done. Where the ointment was made with its leaf juice and applied in the patient suffering from Dadru. Material and methods: For the present study 40 patients of Dadru were registered and divided into 2 groups. Group A: -20 patients diagnosed with superficial fungal disease of the skin treated with standard antifungal medicine Luliconazole for two weeks duration thrice daily treated as controlled group. Group B:- 20 newly diagnosed patients with dadru or superficial fungal disease was given the ointment prepared from Senna alata leaf for two weeks duration thrice daily treated as trial group. Results: In both the group maximum relief in symptoms is seen however Group B had received better recovery in signs and symptoms compared to Group A. Conclusion: It was concluded that trial drug Senna alata had significant antifungal activity and more effective than Luliconazole.
