ABSTRACT
Alkaloids are a class of basic, naturally occurring organic compounds that contain at least one nitrogen atom. alkaloids are many medicinally important alkaloids such as morphine, ephedrine, papaverine, cocaine etc. The dietary intake of small dosage of alkaloids have therapeutic effect as muscle relaxants tranquillizers, painkillers and antimicrobials in human beings. Some alkaloids occur in several genera from different species (caffeine), but must occur in closely related species. All alkaloids of one plant will have a common biogenetic origin. Extraction is based on the basicity of alkaloids and on the fact that they normally occur in plants as salts (i.e: on the solubulity of bases and salts in water and organic solvents).
