Dipti K. Bopate*, Kalpana R. Chavhan and Rajendra D. Lambat

ABSTRACT

Pesticides are chemicals that are applied to private gardens, agricultural land, and other public areas to kill undesirable organisms. Exposure to pesticides can occur directly from occupational, agricultural, and household use. While in general population it occurs mainly through eating food and drinking water contaminated with pesticides. Organophosphate, Carbamate, Organochlorine insecticides, pyrethroid, sulfonylurea herbicides these are the chemicals present in pesticides which causes large number of negative health and also environmental effect. Many pesticides are not easily degradable, they persist in soil, leach to groundwater and surface water and contaminate wide environment. The toxic effect depends upon the exposure time and the concentration of pesticides. Nausea, dizziness, skin burning, itching, irritation of throat and nose these are the immediate health effect of pesticides. Chronic effects of pesticides cause cumulative toxic effect on the body. In Ayurveda it can be corelated with Dushivisha. Dushivisha is cumulative poisons which retains and accumulate within the tissues of human being like birth defects, infertility, bronchitis, Parkinson’s disease, lymphoma, brain cancer and many health problems. To avoid the contamination of food with pesticides, farmers should use alternative methods like Integrated pest management, crop rotation or organic farming.

Keywords: Chemicals, Dushivisha, Exposure, Toxic effect, Cumulative poison.
