ABSTRACT

The oral route is the most preferred route of drug administration. Taste is an important parameter in the case of drugs administered orally and also important factor in the development of oral dosage forms. Unpleasant taste is one of the numerous major formulation issues that certain drugs face. Unpleasant taste and palatability which makes it quite difficult for oral administration to some special populations like paediatrics and geriatrics. Masking the bitter taste of drugs is a potential tool for the improvement of patient compliance so to overcome these problems certain approaches are used to mask unpleasant taste like addition of flavouring and sweetening agents, microencapsulation, inclusion complexation, coating of drugs using suitable polymer, salt preparation, ion-exchange resin, multiple emulsion, spherical agglomeration, melt granulation, solid dispersion, hot melt extrusion, liposomes, adsorption, prodrug, gel formation.
