Abstract

A REVIEW OF CLINICAL OUTCOME ASSESSMENT OF VARIOUS THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME IN GYNAECOLOGY SETUP

Dr. Sandipkumar Bhatt*, Zeel Soni, Dr. Akash Mathuria and Dr. Shrikalp S. Deshpande

ABSTRACT

A combination of physical and psychological changes in women during the premenstrual phase of the menstrual cycle has been observed since Hippocrates' time. The condition could be caused by a number of different factors. The interaction of ovarian steroid hormones, endogenous opioid peptide release in the brain, balance of central neurotransmitters, inflammatory eicosanoids production, and alterations in peripheral autonomic and endocrine function have all been reported as possibilities. Despite numerous studies, the pathophysiologic foundation of PMS remains unknown, especially given the lack of animal models for the illness. According to various findings based on clinical experience, current management of PMS spectrum include Pain killers, Antidepressants, Oral Contraceptive pills, Multivitamins. However, there is a need of a therapy having comparable efficacy with better tolerability and safety profile. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the effects of a nutraceutical containing Vitex Agnus Castus (fruit extract), Vitamin B6, and Magnesium as a complementary therapy to standard medication in PMS patients. All meta-analyses and the most recent reports of specific treatments in controlled treatment studies were chosen. The study will aid in reducing the need for standard therapy as a result of its detrimental consequences.

Keywords: Premenstrual syndrome, Nutraceutical, Vitex agnus castus, Vitamin B6, Magnesium, Natural Health Products.
