ABSTRACT

This work assesses the wound healing and antibacterial activity of the ethanolic extract of S. camptoneura (Loganiaceae) seeds. The wound healing activity was evaluated by daily application of the ointment based on the ethanolic extract of the seeds on circular wounds of 1 cm of diameter induced on the dorsal part of normal wistar rat. Antibacterial activity was carried out according to the method described by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standard (NCCLS, 1995) on five bacterial strains responsible of wound infections. The results show a significant decrease (*p<0.05) of lesion diameters from the fourth day and (***p<0.001) from the sixth day to the treated animals with the pomade based on the extract (10g) and Cicatryl. The extract induces complete wound healing after 14 days against 18 days to the control. At the dose of 500μg/ml, the extract induces growth inhibition of Staphylococcus intermedius and Staphylococcus epidermidis, while growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa occurs at 1000μg/ml. S. intermedius and S. epidermidis was the most sensitive strains to the extract with MIC of 500μg/ml and MIC of 750μg/ml while S. aureus, M. luteus and P. aeruginosa have MIC of 1000 μg/ml.

Keywords: Strychnos camptoneura, bacteria, wound healing, infection.
