Abstract

SPECTROPHOTOMETRIC METHOD FOR SIMULTANEOUS ESTIMATION OF TERBUTALINE SULPHATE AND BROMHEXINE HYDROCHLORIDE IN TABLET DOSAGE FORM

Satish A. Patel and *Bhargav J. Raval

ABSTRACT

The manuscript describes simple sensitive absorbance correction method for the simultaneous estimation of Terbutaline sulphate and Bromhexine hydrochloride in combined dosage form. Absorbance correction method was based on property of additivity of absorbances. The two wavelengths from overlain spectra of both drugs were identified, 341 nm where Bromhexine hydrochloride showed absorbance and Terbutaline sulphate was showed zero absorbance. Hence Bromhexine hydrochloride was directly estimated at 341 nm in mixture without interference of Terbutaline sulphate. Second wavelength used was 228 nm at which Terbutaline sulphate was estimated after correction of absorbance of Bromhexine hydrochloride. The method involved solving of an equation based on measurement of absorbance at two wavelengths 228 and 314 nm. The determinations were made at 228 for Terbutaline sulphate and Bromhexine hydrochloride and 314 nm for Bromhexine hydrochloride over the concentration range of 5 -50 μg/ml for Terbutaline sulphate and 10 – 60 μg/ml for Bromhexine hydrochloride with mean recovery of 99.72 ± 0.38 % and 100.2 ± 0.38 % for Terbutaline sulphate and Bromhexine hydrochloride, respectively by absorbance correction method. This method was found to be simple, sensitive, accurate, precise, reproducible, and economical and can be applicable for the simultaneous determination of Terbutaline sulphate and Bromhexine hydrochloride in combined dosage form.
