ABSTRACT

Gridhrasi has become the most commonly occurring disease in today‟s era. It is being mentioned in 80 Vataja Nanatmaja Vikaras. In Ayurveda, diseases have been named based on their external appearance, Dosha involved, main symptom etc. In case of Gridhrasi, the „Gridhra‟ term refers to “Vulture” where the patient attains the gait as that of vulture due to pain, hence the name Gridhrasi is given. In this case, classical gait refers to „slight lean‟ towards the affected part of body. The clinical feature of Gridhrasi is, low back pain which radiates from the hip, to the posterior aspect of thigh, and down to leg. It can be correlated to “Sciatica” in modern medicine. Sciatica, is a painful condition, in which, pain starts in the lumbar area, and radiates along the course of the sciatic nerve. This article highlights a case study of Gridhrasi, treated with Ayurvedic principles in particular Basti Chikitsa; the therapy which balances the morbid vata dosha and Siravyadha therapy as well as Parijata Seka help in reducing the pain by reducing the vata and Pitta. Here, is a case study of 56 years old, female patient having signs and symptoms of Gridhrasi since 10 days. The patient was admitted and managed with siravyadha, Parijata Patra Kashaya seka followed by Madhuyastaydi Ksheera Basti. The results with rationality have been depicted in this article.

Keywords: Gridhrasi, Basti, siravyadha.
