Christeena Saji*, Karthika Roop and Deepak Kumar Yadav

ABSTRACT

This Study was aimed to find the subjects who are at high risk in developing PCOS by self-test questionnaire. To assess the knowledge and quality of life associated with PCOS by knowledge questionnaire and to create awareness and health behavior of disease in order to control long term consequences. The cross sectional study was conducted in various ladies hostels and PG’s, based on the self-test questionnaire forms (The Risk Factors of PCOS, there are total 17 questions and in that patient scoring ≥10 high risk to get PCOS, ≥5 chance for getting PCO-S, <5 Unpredictable to PCOS). The questionnaire contains total 20 knowledge questions and scoring was done by making cut off value of 11. The score ≤ 11 was considered as poor knowledge while ≥ 12 was considered as adequate knowledge. The quality of life of the PCOS patients was assessed and compared with the healthy patients with the help of a PCOS quality of life questionnaire. It has 26 QOL questions, Score 7 was considered as optimal QOL and 1 is considered as least QOL. In this out of 230 subjects 72 subjects scored greater than or equal to 5 (31% have chance of getting PCOS) and 10 subjects scored greater than or equal to 10 (5% are at high risk of getting PCOS) and rest 148 subjects scored less than 5(64% unpredictable to get PCOS). The knowledge of 230 subjects, in that 79.13% of the subjects are of poor knowledge and the rest 20.86% only have adequate knowledge. The quality of life of PCOS diagnosed subjects are low (p<0.001). Menstrual problem had a significant effect on quality of life of PCOS subjects, it was the domain with a very low mean value of scores (2.47±1.23) from the optimal QOL score (7) (p<0.001). Emotion also had a very significant effect on quality of life it was the domain which scored less scores after menstrual problem (2.97±0.89) when compared to the optimal QOL score(7) (p<0.001). In the 5 domains infertility was the domain which scored high scores of mean value (4.48±1.313). Girls who are at high risk to develop PCOS and who have chances of getting PCOS should be investigated. A good counselling session regarding lifestyle modification will help the people who are already diagnosed with PCOS to minimise the symptoms and also to improve the quality of life.
