REVIEW ON: MEDICATED LOZENGES FOR DELIVERING DRUG FOR LOCAL ACTION AND SYSTEMIC EFFECT

ABSTRACT

Lozenges are one of the popular and most widely used oral confectionary Products. Lozenges have a bright future as a novel method of delivering drugs for local action and systemic effect in the oral cavity. The lozenges are solid medicated, flavoured and sweetened base dosage form intended to be sucked and held in the mouth or pharynx. The advantages of medicated lozenges are that they improve the retention time within the mouth of the drug type, increase bioavailability, reduce gastric irritation, and bypass the hepatic first-pass metabolism. The acceptance of lozenges as a form of dosage is high for adults and also high for children. Different kinds of lozenges are available in the market like Compressed lozenges, Caramel based medicated lozenges Soft lozenges, and hard candy lozenges. The Present review covers various facets of medicated lozenges.
