Abstract

A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PREOPERATIVE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM ON ANXIETY AMONG PATIENTS UNDERGOING ABDOMINAL SURGERY AT SELECTED HOSPITALS OF MORADABAD, U.P.

ABSTRACT

Background: Anxiety is the unpleasant experience of individual which results the hypertension, tachycardia, respiration, hyperthermia and increased stress hormone such as cortisol. Abdominal surgery includes such as hernia, cholilethiasis, intentional obstruction and appendicitis. The incidence rate of preoperative anxiety is stated that 60-80% of patients had anxiety. The participants are divided into two groups experimental & control group each are equally distributed respectively. Educational intervention is given through the flip chart and taken post- test of preoperative anxiety among patient undergoing abdominal surgery of selected hospital of Moradabad. Objectives: To evaluate the effectiveness of educational program of preoperative anxiety patient undergoing abdominal surgery and to determine association of level of anxiety with selected demographic variables. Method: The study design adopted for this present study is quantitative quasi experimental control group design. The population for the present study abide of preoperative anxiety patient of surgery ward from Teerthanker Mahaveer hospital & research centre. Non probability consecutive sampling technique was used to select the preoperative anxiety patient for the study and were selected each group 40 patients in experimental and control group. Data was collected by State Trait Anxiety Inventory scale (STAI). The collected data was entered in the master data sheet and analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics as per objective of the study using version 2.0 SPSS software. Result: The preoperative anxiety mean post test score of experimental group (53.98) was greater than the mean post test score of the control group (31.51) with the mean difference of 22.47. Hence it shows the effectiveness of preoperative anxiety patient education (p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study concludes that preoperative patient education is highly effective for the preoperative anxiety among patient undergoing abdominal surgery. It helps to enhance the positive attitude towards the surgery and to reduce the preoperative anxiety.
