Abstract

INFLUENCE OF THE COMPONENT EXCIPIENT ON FUNCTIONALITY OF NIMODIPINE TRANSDERMAL PATCHES

Viresh K. Chandur*, Kirthi P. Anchan and Ramkrishna Shabaraya A.

ABSTRACT

Nimodipine is an anti-hypertensive drug. It is widely used calcium channel blocker the objectives of present work was to formulate and evaluate transdermal patch containing Nimodipine with permeation enhancer Tween 80 and PEG 400 which may result in enhanced absorption and there by improved bio availability. Nimodipine patches were prepared by solvent casting method using Hydroxy propyl methyl cellulose (HPMC K4M), and Polyvinyl Pyrolidine K30(PVP K30) and Dibutyl phthalate as plasticizer were evaluated for various parameters like FTIR, drug content, folding endurance, thickness, in vitro drug release study. The Nimodipine patches were found to uniform transparent and drug content was found to be in the range of 27.31±0.48 (P1) and 29.83±0.35 mg (P4). The cumulative percentage drug permeated in 14h was found to be the highest for the formulation carrying HPMC K4M and PVP in low ratio (1:1, P5, P6 & P7) whereas the cumulative percentage of drug release in 14h was found to be low in the formulation containing high ratio of HPMC K4M and PVP (2:1, 3:1, P3, P1) and vice versa (P2 & P4). P7 is considered as the best formulations the data obtained showed the evidence for the enhanced release thus the study suggests that polymer variation of Nimodipine patches with tween 80 and PEG 400 are effective for increasing permeation rate.
