Dr. Shaily Bhatt*

ABSTRACT

Background and Objectives: Liver diseases are one of the major causes of disease burden all over world including our country so it is the need of hour to search for alternative drugs for treatment of liver diseases. N ACETYL CYSTINE is well known drug and it is used for various supportive treatments. So it must have hepatoprotective role in case of acute hepatitis. Material and Methods: A total of 50 male and female patients of age group between 15-65 years, diagnosed clinically and biochemically as the case of dengue fever associated hepatitis and ready to give consent were recruited in the study from SVBP Hospital, L.L.R.M Medical College Meerut U.P. Subjects who fulfilled the selection criteria were randomized into two groups. 25 patients belonging to control group received conventional treatment for dengue fever while 25 patients enrolled in treated group were given N acetyl cysteine along with conventional treatment for dengue fever. Each patient was followed up for 3 weeks. Serum bilirubin, serum alanine transaminase (ALT), Serum aspartate transaminase (AST), Serum Bilirubin were measured initially and at the end of 1,2,3 weeks respectively. Results, Interpretation and Conclusion: Intragroup comparison using repeated measure ANOVA demonstrated a statistically significant (p<.001) decrease in above mentioned parameters for both treated and control groups at all intervals of times. Intergroup comparison done by student –t-test revealed statistically significant (<.001) difference in all parameters in treated and control groups at all intervals of time.
