ABSTRACT

Okra gum has been evaluated as a binder in paracetamol tablet formulations. Compressional properties of the formulations were analyzed using density measurements and the compression equations of Heckel and Kawakita as assessment parameters. The mechanical properties of the tablets were assessed using the crushing strength and friability of the tablets. Disintegration times of the tablet formulations were assessed using the six station disintegration test apparatus. Formulations containing okra gum as a binder show a faster onset and higher amount of plastic deformation than those containing gelatin. The crushing strength and disintegration times of the tablets increased with increased binder concentration while their friability decreased. Although gelatin produced tablets with higher crushing strength, okra gum produced tablets with longer disintegration times than those containing gelatin. This study suggests that okra gum maybe a useful hydrophilic matrixing agent in sustained drug delivery devices. This study suggests that okra gum maybe a useful hydrophilic matrixing agent in sustained drug delivery devices. Trigonella-foenum graecum (fenugreek) has been reported to contain upto 56.0% starch. The starch was extracted from the seeds of Trigonella-foenum graecum (fenugreek). The present study was undertaken to find out the potential of gum from Almond gum to act as a binder and release retardant in tablet formulations. No significant work has been reported to use it as a tablet binder. The effect of almond gum and pvp on the release of diclofenac sodium was studied. The FT-IR spectroscopic studies of drug, gum and mixture indicated no chemical interaction. Seven formulations were prepared by wet granulation method containing Microcrystalline cellulose as diluents, diclofenac sodium as model drug using 2%,4%,6%,8% and 10% w/v of almond gum solution and 2%,4% w/v of pvp gum solution.
