ABSTRACT

The objective of the proposed study was to evaluate the anti-depressant effect of essential oil Cupressus sempervirens (EOCS) in experimental animal models. Anti-depressant activity of essential oil Cupressus sempervirens was investigated in experimental animal models. Two doses of EOCS (75mg/kg and 150mg/kg) (P.O) was subjected for the evaluation. Imipramine (10mg/kg) (P.O) was used as standard in all the Forced swim test (FST) model of animals and parameters estimated includes duration of immobility and estimation of biochemical mono amino oxidase. Both the lower dose (75mg/kg) and higher dose (150mg/kg) of the essential oil Cupressus sempervirens showed dose depended significant decrease in depression and decrease in biochemical parameter of Mono Amino Oxidase when compared with the vehicle control. The result obtained was comparable with that of the standard drug Imipramine. The finding of the present study provides the evidence that the essential oil Cupressus sempervirens may be beneficial against the depression.
