ABSTRACT
Aim and Objectives: The study aims to evaluate the prevalence and determinants of polypharmacy in cardiovascular patients admitted in a tertiary care hospital. This research was performed to find out the prevalence of polypharmacy and cardiovascular polypharmacy, polypharmacy associated factors, sociodemographic details and clinical characteristics of subjects. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational study done for a period of 6 months involving 110 patients. The prevalence of polypharmacy and cardiovascular polypharmacy was determined. The statistical association between the variables and polypharmacy was analyzed using SPSS version 26. Logistic regressions were used to identify the
determinants of polypharmacy in cardiovascular patients. Result and Discussion: The mean age of the patients was 63.145 ± 14.218. The mean number of medications prescribed per patient was 12.245 ± 6.546. The prevalence of polypharmacy was 80% in the patients while cardiovascular polypharmacy was 39.09%. Elderly people are more likely to have polypharmacy (p<0.001). Also, having a history of cardiovascular diseases as wells as an increase in the number of comorbidities were found to increase the likelihood of polypharmacy (p= 0.44 and p= 0.039 respectively). Conclusion: Most of the cardiovascular patients who were admitted in the tertiary care hospital were on polypharmacy. The elderly age, family history of cardiovascular diseases and comorbidities were the determinants of polypharmacy in cardiovascular patients. Therefore, it is important that the clinicians should ensure the relevance of all prescribed medications and pharmaceutical care plan to prevent inappropriate polypharmacy inorder to reduce polypharmacy associated burdens.
