Abstract

THE EFFECT OF EXPIRED MEDICINES AND PERCIEVED RISKS OF PURCHASING IT IN STORES

ABSTRACT

 This study is expected to focus on the quality of expired drug and to assess whether quality of expired medicine deteriorates to what extent. This work is inspired by shelf-life extension program undertaken by US Military and defense unit. It will also help in understanding potency of the expired formulation after the date of expiry and what are parameters which are affected after expiry date.  It has been observed that not necessarily after the expiration date the drug loses its potency and efficacy. It might show some toxic effects. This work focuses on qualitative evaluation of expired formulation with respect to non-expired one. Aim 1. The aim of the work is to study the efficacy and effects of medicines if used after their expiration date and what would be the people‟s choice in purchasing the short expiry medicines or people would still prefer buying expired medicines if the pharmacist suggests them. 2. Also, to carry out survey on the people‟s point of view on the expired medicines, puffed medicines or the defect in packaging, disposal of medicines in households and what are the regulation according to them if the need to file a complaint regarding any mistake done by a chemist or a pharmacist that caused harm to the patients or customer. Objectives:  To establish people‟s knowledge about expired medicines.  To understand people‟s knowledge about the efficacy of medication after expiration and what side effects they may cause.  To study the different ways household people, dispose expired medicines.  To study their point of view on buying short expiry medicines from stores.  The study is also done to compare the effects caused by the intake of expired medicines and different ways people dispose expired medicines at their house.  The study is also done to know people‟s behavior on disposal of expired and damaged drugs and their effect on environment.  Our one more focus about this survey is to get peoples point of view on who should educate community on expired drugs.  To find out how people react/actions they take towards pharmacist when they are given expired medicine
