Abstract

ANALYTICAL STUDY OF YASHTYADI LEPA AND PRAPAUNDARIKADI KWATHA: AYURVEDIC FORMULATIONS

Priyanka Rani, Preity Rawat*, Gunjan Sharma and Arun Kumar

ABSTRACT

Kriyakalpa procedures are described in classical texts and are applied according to the disease type and disease stage. The reason might be that the drugs administered systematically may not cross the blood aqueous, blood-vitreous and blood-retinal barriers. Vidalaka and Seka karma are described under Kriyakalpa given in Ayurvedic texts. Vidalaka is a type of Kriyakalpa therapy which is mainly indicated in acute inflammatory conditions of eyes such as Daha (burning sensation), Updeha (discharge), Ashru (watering) Shopha (swelling) and Raga (redness). In Seka Karma, lukewarm Kwatha is poured over closed eyelids which depresses local inflammation by increasing the blood circulation. Different formulations are given in classic texts for eye diseases and one among them is Yashtiyadi Lepa and Prapaundrikadi kwath mentioned by Acharya Yogratnakara in Netra
chikitsa. The present study has been undertaken to demonstrate safety profile for local application of Yastiyadi Lepa (Vidalaka) and Prapaundrikadi Kwatha (Seka karma) in one of the ocular diseases i.e. Shushkakshipaka and to develop the physicochemical profiles of both the formulations. In the present study pharmacodynamics of both formulations has been established according to classical texts after their preparations. Organoleptic parameters along with physico-chemical analysis have been also studied. Both the samples are also gone through microbiological limit test (MLT) for the estimation of bacterial count. Thin layer chromatography (TLC) of Yastiyadi Lepa as well as of Rasanjana is also studied.

Keywords: Yastiyadi Lepa, Shushkakshipaka, Prapaundrikadi Kwatha, Rasanjana, Analytical Study.
