Abstract

EXTRACTION OF APIGENIN FROM GERMAN CHAMOMILE (MATRICARIA CHAMOMILLA L.) BY PRESSURIZED HOT WATER

Minko Dinchev Govedarov*

ABSTRACT

Studies were conducted to explore the extraction of dry German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) using pressurized hot water for deriving the active ingredient apigenin. For the purpose, a series of tests were conducted under identical conditions, using dry untreated raw material in one case, and steam- distilled raw material in the other case. Exhausting extraction with methyl alcohol of two types of feedstock was used as a control sample. Results show that after six extractions of dry untreated German chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) using water as a solvent at a temperature of 150 оС with a total duration of 60 min, the yield of total dry matter is 34.08 % of the absolute dry weight
of the raw material, and the yield of apigenin is 0.842 % of the absolute dry weight of the raw material. When using processed steam- distilled raw material, these numbers are 44.83 % yield of total dry matter and 1.036 % yield of apigenin, respectively. The above data shows that the used method is suitable for extracting the active ingredient apigenin from both untreated dry raw material and processed steam- distilled waste raw material.

Keywords: Green extraction, Pressurized hot water extraction, German chamomile, Apigenin.
