PREVALENCE AND CLINICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE PATIENTS ADMITTED IN A TERTIARY CARE HOSPITAL

ABSTRACT
Aim and Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and clinical characteristics of chronic liver disease patients admitted in a Gastroenterology department of a tertiary care hospital. Method: This is a prospective observational study done for a period of 6 months. The patient details were enrolled based on the inclusion criteria. Patient’s socio-demographic and clinical data were recorded in a predesigned proforma and analyzed the 100 patients prescriptions according to the objectives. Data analysis was performed and tables with figures were prepared. Result: Among the 100 cases collected, 64 cases were diagnosed with CLD. Majority of the patients were males. Most of the patients were in the age group of 41-80. Only few patients
had family history of CLD. Hypertension (HTN) and Diabetes mellitus (DM) were the most common co-morbid life style disease seen in CLD patients. Most of the people showed history of CLD. Abdominal distension found to be the major symptom among the patients. SGPT, SGOT, and Total bilirubin levels were found to be high in some patients. 46 patients were admitted in the hospital. There was no death reported during our study period. Conclusion: Chronic liver disease is an emerging threat to the society which should be taken into account, in order to reduce the upcoming increase in morbidity and mortality rate due to CLD.
