ABSTRACT
The objective of the proposed study was to evaluate therapeutic potential of essential oil of Pogostemon cablin (EOPC) against experimentally induced Alzheimer‟s disease in mice using PSAP and MWM follwed by Brain Acetyl cholinesterase activity was estimated to check enzyme inhibitory property. 1mg/cage and 2mg/cage EOPC was inhaled to each animal in inhalation chamber for 15 min for 20 days and observed for SLD, ELT and TSTQ on 20th and 27th day by using PSAP and MWM for Acquisition memory and for retrival memory test was repeated after 24 hr. On 28th day same groups was used for screening AchE activity. The quantitative analysis of EOPC was carried out by using GCMS. Both the 1mg/cage and 2mg/cage
doses of EOPC showed dose dependent significant increase in learning and memory activity when compared with control. By observing duration of 27th day treatment has significant increase in learning and memory. 2mg/cage dose had inhibited enzyme significantly and increase Ach level. The outcome of the present study provides the evidence that the essential oil of Pogostemon cablin reported dose dependent beneficial effect against scopolamine induced Alzheimer‟s disease. GCMS confirmed the presences of terpenoids which may be reason for anti-Alzheimer‟s disease activity.
