AN ARCHIAC AND OCCIDENTAL PERSPECTIVE TO TAALA - (BORASSUS FLABELLIFER LINN)

ABSTRACT
Taala (Borassus flabellifer Linn) is known as” Truna raja” in Nighantus which means king among the grass family which grows into a tree reaching a height up to 30 m (98ft). It is considered as the state tree of Tamil nadu and all parts of plant are used for both economical and medicinal purposes.``Neera” or ``Mastaka” is one of the chief products of Taala which have high nutrional value. It is one among important Vruksha mentioned in Vrukshadi varga. Rasapanchaka and effect on dosha of Taala as per most of authors are Madhura rasa, Snigdha and Guru guna, Sheeta veerya, Madhura vipaka and Vatapittahara. Taala possess various pharmacological activities like anti diabetic, anti bacterial, anti diuretic, nephroprotective etc An
attempt is made to unravel the medicinal properties and usage in this current over review.
