Abstract

ANALYSIS OF RENAL DIALYSIS AND REHABILITATION OF PATIENTS: MINI-REVIEW

Hind Ali Alzahrani, Rasha Mohammed Saleem, Saba Beigh*

ABSTRACT

Chronic Renal Failure (CRF) is one of the severely affecting world health problems intensifying widely in the older age population instigated due to damaged kidneys. The most effective way to cure CRF is through dialysis as it eliminates accumulated toxins of the body. Although, patients who are on dialysis are also at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and has been related to other side effects including thyroid imbalance, oxidative stress, heart disorders, and higher risk of hypertension. Renal rehabilitation can be explained as "coordinated, multilevel actions designed to enhance physical, psychological and social wellbeing of a renal patient in order to slow or stabilize and even reverse the progression of renal deterioration thereby lowering mortality and morbidity". Various official home pages such as PubMed, EMBASE, and SCOPUS were investigated for observational studies to provide a comparison between hemodialysis versus peritoneal dialysis modalities keeping into consideration various risk factors causes of infection, cardiovascular events, the mortality rate of the elderly population suffering from LNESRD, as initial RRT modality before renal transplant through systematic review of available literature. A total of twenty-one studies were included. Results depicted an overall 92,111 patients were located and were diagnosed with LN-ESRD before proceeding for the purpose of kidney transplantation. Additionally, hemodialysis was shown to be associated with a greater incidence of lupus flares as compared to peritoneal dialysis, with an insignificant value as measured by P-value (P >0.05). Severe infections associated with hemodialysis were also related to higher risk cause of cardiovascular events in comparison to peritoneal dialysis and the statistical values were found to be significant as P-value was below 0.05 (P<0.05). The mortality rate due to hemodialysis was also found higher but not significant (P>0.05). This study offers mini-review of renal dialysis and rehabilitation of patients. A research on a small group of dialysis patients depicted that an amalgamation of aerobic and progressive resistance exercise performed regularly 2-3 times a week for 2-3 months can drastically improve life expectancy. Hence to conclude renal rehabilitation may be an efficient and practicable approach in the field of rehabilitation for severely damaged renal patients.
