ABSTRACT
Azanza garckeana is a cash crop in Nigeria that is mainly seen and marketed in Northern Nigeria with several medicinal claims. We conducted a systematic review on the medicinal uses of the plant extract. The review was designed and conducted according to the provided guidelines of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA). We identified a total of 22 published articles through literature search. After removing duplicates and irrelevant articles, a total of 8 articles were selected for this review. The concentrations of the plant extract used ranges from 12.5μg/ml to 100 μg/ml for in-vitro studies and 150mg/kg to 600mg/kg for in-vivo studies. Azanza garckeana exhibited a variety of biological effects
including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, aphrodisiac, uterotonic, analgesic, antiarthritic, haematologic, and wound healing activities. The proposed mechanisms of action of the observed effects were due to presence of different phytochemicals found in either the fruit, bark, root or the stem.
