Abstract

PRODUCTION OF BIOFUEL FROM MICROALGAE: BIODIESEL, BIOETHANOL – A REVIEW

Mayuri Patil, Tanvi Pachpute*, Aditi Patil, Sakshi Suryawanshi and Shivani Kakkar Khanna

ABSTRACT

Biofuels are the most anticipated products of scientific research. Fossil fuels are running out and pollution is increasing globally. Microalgae are widely used as a high-growing petroleum-based renewable energy source, with high growth rates, they can grow on wastewater and freshwater. Microalgae are a group of photosynthetic autotrophs. Microalgae produce atmospheric oxygen via CO2 using solar energy. The production of biodiesel and bioethanol from biomass sources are among the best alternatives to petroleum-based fuel and recently, are commonly used for transportation in many countries. One of the promising options is algae-based biofuels. Due to awareness about the depletion of fossil fuels and the harmful emission from their use biofuels are now much needed, Biodiesel can be used instead of fuel oil, which is mainly produced by fats blended with conventional fuel plants. The production of biodiesel and bioethanol from biomass sources are among the best alternatives to petroleum-based fuel and recently are commonly used for transportation in many countries. The present review describes the advantages and limitations of microalgae for the production of biofuels and the production of bioenergy such as biodiesel, biogas, bioethanol, bio-hydrogen, bio-oil and syngas production from microalgae with economic value in the current market.

Keywords: Microalgae cultivation, Biodiesel Production, Bioethanol Production.
