Abstract

NATURAL SUPERDISINTEGRANTS FOR FAST DISSOLVING TABLETS- A REVIEW

Aman Singla* and Shivali Singla

ABSTRACT

Oral route of is the most preferred and most commonly used route for drug delivery. The oral route is the safest, convenient and low cost route of drug administration. Fast disintegrating tablets are very popular form and emerging trend in novel drug delivery system of oral route that allows the fastest delivery of drug systemically by disintegrating and dissolving within the mouth in few seconds of delivery even without water. The desire of fast disintegrating tablets increased because of many disadvantages associated with conventional dosage forms especially dysphagia (difficulty in swallowing). The application of FDT has increased in paediatric and geriatric patients. Fast disintegrating tablets are formulated by addition of superdisintegrants that would allow the tablet to disintegrant rapidly within mouth without chewing and water. Disintegrants are substances or mixture of substances added the drug formulation that facilitates the breakup or disintegration of tablet or capsule content into smaller particles that dissolve more rapidly than in the absence of disintegrants. Diverse categories of superdisintegrants such as natural, semi-synthetic, synthetic agents are available in the market that not only allow the disintegration of tablets but also overcome the limitations of conventional dosage forms, improve the performance and acceptability of the fast dissolving tablets. The objective of the present study is to highlight the various kinds of natural superdisintegrants along with their role in tablet disintegration and drug release, which are being used in the formulation to provide the safer, effective drug delivery with patient compliance. This review focuses on various natural superdisintegrants efficiency.
