Rita I. Odo*, Thelma E. Ihedioha, Chigozie S. Ukwueze, Polycarp O. Akpa and Ikechukwu J. Udeani

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a major cause of global decrease of fertility rates in the developing world. It has been associated with reproductive impairment in both male and female. The impact of diabetes mellitus on reproduction is profound, as seen by diminution in fertility and increase in reproductive losses. Oxidative stress induced by sustained hyperglycemia is the major cause of diabetic reproductive damage. This review article aims to provide brief information on the adverse effects of diabetes mellitus on reproduction, caused by sustained hyperglycemia and its associated oxidative damage.

Keywords: Diabetes mellitus, reproduction, hyperglycemia, oxidative damage.
