Dr. Trupti Thak*, Dr. Mritunjay Sharma and Dr. Archana Dachewar

ABSTRACT

In Ayurveda Acharya Sushruta has described 11 Shirorogas. Amongst these one is Anantavata which is Tridoshaj Vyadhi. While explaining the symptoms of Anantavata Acharya Sushruta has described that the vitiated Tridoshas get lodged in Manya or Greevaparshwa and produce severe intolerable pain at the back of neck, in the eye ball, frontal region, and root of nose and in temporal region. It also causes Hanugraha, Netrarogas and Gandaparshwakampa. The symptoms of Anantavata can be well correlated with Trigeminal Neuralgia in modern science. Trigeminal Neuralgia is a neuropathic disorder characterized by episodes of intense pain in the face, originating from the trigeminal nerve. The pain may be felt in the ear, eye, lips, nose, scalp, forehead, cheeks, teeth, or jaw and side of the face. In this case study, a 54 years old male patient visited Kayachikitsa Opd having complaint of episodic unilateral shooting or electric shock like severe pain on right side of face for brief duration and restricted jaw movements since 6 months. The patient was treated based on Anantavata Chikitsa where the treatment protocol included Nasya, Nadisweda, Shamana Chikitsa (oral medications) and Vata – Pittaghna Ahar. At the end of 1 month patient showed marked relief in his symptoms and significant improvement in his disease.

Keywords: Anantavata, Trigeminal Neuralgia, Nasya, Nadisweda, Shaman Chikitsa, Vata-Pittaghna Ahar.
