RETROSPECTIVE STUDY ON PREVALENCE OF THYROID DISORDERS IN WOMEN

ABSTRACT
Thyroid disorders are one of the most common endocrine disorders faced worldwide. Females are most affected by this disorder. In India around 42 million people suffer from thyroid disorders. Our study focuses on prevalence of thyroid disorders in women. This retrospective study was carried out at Pushpagiri Medical College Hospital, Thiruvalla in the department of Endocrinology and General Medicine. This study was conducted for a period of six months after the approval from Institutional Ethics Committee. Patients were selected based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Our study
included 168 patients and on analysing it was found that hypothyroidism (94.04%) is more prevalent compared to hyperthyroidism (5.95%). The study patient´s mean age group can be interpreted as 41.68±12.58. Our study also found out the most prominent signs and symptoms & risk factors associated with the disorder. Among them cold sensitivity and weight gain were found to be statistically significant (p<0.05) for hypothyroidism and for hyperthyroidism, heat sensitivity, weight loss, frequent bowels, sweating, tachycardia and increased appetite were found to be statistically significant. On assessing the risk factors contributing to the development of thyroid disorder autoimmunity and Family History were found to be prominent and nearly half of the population had atleast one risk factor. Thyroid disorders also have seen caused various reproductive health issues in patients. An evaluation was done to study number of patients suffering from these issues.
