ABSTRACT

Forty (40) male Wistar rats weighing 150.2– 196.7g were divided into four (1-4) groups of ten rats each to investigate the lauded aphrodisiac activity of Fleurya aestuans leaves by herbalists in Nigeria. Group 1 served as Control, whereas groups 2, 3, and 4 were given 50, 75, and 200 mg/kg of Fleurya aestuans extract, respectively. The male rats' mating behaviors were observed after they were paired with a receptive female (1:1). The results revealed that the extract at 50, 75, and 200 mg/kg increased the frequency of mount and intromission while decreasing the latencies of mount and intromission significantly (P<0.05). Furthermore, ejaculation latency rose significantly (P<0.05) as ejaculation frequency increased. In comparison to control, the extract reduced the Wistar rats' post-ejaculatory interval, prolactin, and the percentage of slow, aberrant, and dead sperms. As a result, this research highlights the aphrodisiac properties of Fleurya aestuans leaves in Nigerian traditional medicine.
