ABSTRACT

Daucus carota (Apiaceae) is traditionally used in ayurvedic medicine for apparently much varied conditions. It is commonly used in combination with other substances or sometimes alone. Supportive evidence from pharmacological studies suggests its prominent role in treatment of inflammation. Inflammation is a defense mechanism and protective response of vascular tissues to harmful stimuli like pathogens, damaged cells, allergens, irritants. Inflammation is of two types i.e. acute and chronic. The acute toxicity study of the extract had shown no sign of toxicity up to a dose level of 2000mg/kg body weight. Rats treated with Histamine (1% w/v in normal saline) were significantly induced paw volume when compared to normal group. Oral dose of 200 mg/kg (T1) and 400 mg/kg (T2) of FJDC (Fresh juice of Dacus carota) was showed significantly (p<0.01), (p<0.001) inhibited Histamine induced paw volume at 60, 120, 180, and 240 minutes when compared with control group. Carrageenan induced paw edema in rats, which is an acute model used to assess anti-inflammatory activity. The extract has inhibited paw edema in dose related manner. Thus Fresh juice of Dacus carota possesses significant anti-inflammatory activity.
