ABSTRACT

Avascular necrosis (AVN) is the condition in which the bone death occurs as a result of ischemia to an area of bone tissue. In extreme cases, it may result in the bone collapse. AVN can be primary or secondary to other pathology i.e., sickle cell disease, long term use of corticosteroids, etc. It usually affects men and is bilateral in over 50% of patients. Patient is frequently asymptomatic in early stages, as the disease progresses the patient may complain of pain in the groin, limping and clinical examination may reveal limitation of movements. AVN described in modern system of medicine closely resembles with Asthimajjagat Vata. Ayurveda disease review is done from Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, Ashtanga Hridaya, Yoga Ratnakar, Bhavprakash Samhita and Harita Samhita. Modern disease review is done from various books of Orthopedics as well as search engines like J-Gate, Google Scholar, Ayush Portal, ARD are reviewed for obtaining the information related to AVN of Femoral Head and Asthimajjagat Vata. In all Samhitas the symptoms of Asthimajjagata Vata is given almost similarly and the treatment protocol given by the Acharya Charka is when adopted to treat the condition it will improve the condition. The present paper intends to highlight the ayurveda management in lowering the symptoms and reducing the chance of total hip replacement therapy in the patient of AVN.
