ABSTRACT

Oral ingestion is most convenient and commonly employed route of drug delivery due to its ease of administration, least aseptic and flexibility in the design of dosage form. Oral sustained release (SR) products provide an advantage over conventional dosage forms by optimizing bio-pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamic properties of drugs in such a way that it reduce dosing frequency to an extent that once daily dose is sufficient for penetration, polymer swelling, drug dissolution, drug diffusion and matrix erosion. Sustained Release is also a promising method for reducing medication side effects by preventing the therapeutic concentration of the drug from fluctuating in the body. Sustained drug release formulations are quite helpful in treating chronic diseases. Sustained release matrix tablet is formulated mainly by wet granulation or direct compression method or by dispersion of solid particle within solid particle within a porous matrix formed by using different polymers like Poly methyl methacrylate (PMMA), Polyglycolic acid, HPMC etc.

Keywords: matrix tablet, sustained release, polymers.
