ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a global disease which affects millions of people's health. While type 1 diabetes (T1D) is caused by autoimmune damage of pancreatic beta-cells that produce insulin, type 2 diabetes (T2D) is the result of a combination of insulin resistance and insulin secretory beta cell malfunction. Clear description and diagnoses of these two diabetes have become increasingly problematic and have led to the inclusion in the accelerator hypothesis of a new category - double or hybrid diabetes (DD). In this review, we talk about the global prevalence of DD, its principal physiological features, such as beta-cell autoimmunity, insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease, the main risk factors for DD development, mainly genetic, obesity and lifestyle options, as well as potential treatments such as insulin titration, metformin, comportement modifications. To properly manage this complicated, hybrid disease in the future, an increased knowledge of DD among the general population and the practitioners of primary care is important.
