ABSTRACT

Aim: To assess the quality of life in dialysis patients and incidence of complications during dialysis. Materials and method: A prospective observational study of a six-month duration was conducted. All the data were documented and analysed. The patient’s quality of life was assessed using WHOQOL-BREF Questionnaire. Data collected were entered into Microsoft Excel and Statistical analysis was done using statistical software IBM SPSS Statistics. Result: The quality of life of haemodialysis patient was significantly lower in all the four domains particularly physical domain ((36.95+12.81). Age has a statistically significant correlation with physical domain (p<0.05). There was a positive relationship between sex and physical, social relationship and environmental domains p<0.05). Complications observed during dialysis were (94%) bp changes followed by muscle cramps (87%).79% of patient experienced impaired vision, back pain (61%), edema (58%), dyspnoea (58%), fever and chills (55%) %), dizziness (55%), nausea (51%), dryness and itching (39%), fainting (26%), chest pain (24%). Conclusion: Quality of life in haemodialysis patients was observed and found to be significantly impaired. The physical health of the patient is found to be lower than indicates that the patient was more dependent on dialysis for survival. HD is associated with a vivid number of complications, some of which are life-threatening. However, strict vigilance, proper assessment of patients, good clinical judgment, and health education helps in the early detection and reduces the incidence of these disease, cost, mortality, and morbidity.
