Abstract

EVALUATION OF ANTIDIABETIC ACTIVITY OF METHANOLIC EXTRACT OF EICHHORNIA CRASSIPES IN STREPTOZOTOCINE DIABETIC RATS

Brajmohan Kumar*, Sangeeta Mewada and Shailendra Lariya

ABSTRACT

The present study shows that the methanolic extract of Eichhornia crassipes has potential anti diabetic action in STZ induced diabetic in rats. The use of STZ to induce DM in rodent models is widely accepted and STZ induced diabetes is reported to resemble human DM. Glibenclamide is often used as a standard antidiabetic drug in STZ-induced moderate diabetes to compare the anti-diabetic effects of a variety of bioactive compounds. Administration of the leaves of Eichhornia crassipes all tested doses (200, and 400 mg/kg) resulted in a significant hypoglycemic effect in normoglycemic rats. The hypoglycemic effect of glibenclamide was evident due to the stimulation of insulin release from pancreatic β-cells and inhibition of glucagon secretion. The leaf might possess an insulin-like effect orstimulate insulin secretion from β-cells. Preliminary phytochemical screening of the leaves Eichhornia crassipes extract showed the presence of alkaloids, Flavonoid, terpenoids, tannins, phenolic compounds and saponins. The significant ant-diabetic, antihyperlipidemic, and antioxidant activity of the leaves of Eichhornia crassipes in this study may be attributed to the presence of these principal constituents.
