ANTI-PARKINSON’S ACTIVITY OF ACORUS CALAMUS LINN USING HALOPERIDOL CATALEPSY MODEL

Mukesh Kumar Raut*, Shailendra Kumar Lariya and Omprakash Banskar

ABSTRACT

Phytochemicals and promising pharmacological activities are widely distributed in medicinal plant of Acorus calamus Linn (rhizome). From present investigation it was observed that extract at selected doses of 200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg don’t produced any significant effect on normal behavioral parameters and this was conformed on the basis of effect on parameters in haloperidol schedule, thus it was confirmed that no side effects will be observed in normal animals at selected dose. Phytochemical testing it was observed that extract was rich in bioactive Phytoconstituents like carbohydrate, alkaloids, flavonoid, glycoside, phenol and tannins. Most of these components are considered to be an important alternative to possess significant antioxidant potential. Thus, it can be concluded that the methanolic extract Acorus calamus levels higher anti-parkinson activity. Present study supports the traditional use of Acorus calamus by local healers as traditional medicine in treatment of catalepsy. This effect can be attributed to presence of various bioactive components present on extract and also be due to protective potential of extract confirm the mechanism of cation behind the haloperidol induced anti-parkinson potential of extract.
